The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) mourns the death of a true friend and supporter, former Ottawa-Centre MP Paul Dewar, who died of brain cancer at the age of 56 on February 6, 2019.

February 6 marks the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Professional Institute in 1920. As we reflect on our history, we can be proud of our achievements: our pay equity victories, the socially progressive family leave package which improved maternity, paternity and adoption leaves

On November 28, PIPSC - BC/Yukon Region - Yukon Branch demonstrated support for fellow unionists of PSCAC YEU who are on strike in Whitehorse. The branch made a generous donation of $1000 to support PSAC Many Rivers’ counsellors and staff.  

The PIPSC 2019 Young Workers Forum is taking place on Friday, February 15th and Saturday, February 16th, 2019 in Gatineau, Quebec.

On October 29th the Federal Government announced proactive pay equity legislation which would require federally regulated workplaces to examine their compensation practices and ensure that women and men receive equal pay for equal work.

On November 20, workplaces and communities across Canada and around the world will take the time to observe Transgender Day of Remembrance and commemorate those individuals who have lost their lives or faced violence and discrimination due to transphobia.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Iris Craig November 4, 2018.  One of the Institute’s longest-serving Presidents, Iris Craig was first elected President on January 1, 1986 and retired on December 31, 1993. At that time, PIPSC represented 34,000 members under 52 separate occupational groups under 13 different employers.

The news last week that the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has won major improvements to its members’ dental plan has prompted many PIPSC members to ask if they can soon expect similar improvements.

On September 19th the federal government officially began the process to replace Phoenix. Scott Brison, Treasury Board president, announced a procurement process to plan, design and purchase a new system suggesting a Spring 2019 implementation.

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness.

This week, Canadians marked our first Gender Equality Week. On June 21st, 2018 Bill C-309 was passed legislating the fourth week in September as Canada’s annual Gender Equality Week.

As the federal Finance Committee prepares for cross-country public hearings on next year’s Budget, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) has released a fact sheet showing 72% of Canadians agree “in the next federal budget, funding for federal government science programs should be restored to what it was in 2011.” The finding, by Environics Research, is significant since overall funding for federal government science is in fact lower today than it was under the Harper government, in particular for research and development (R&D).

PIPSC and the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) celebrated the renewal of their collective agreement on July 23rd, 2018. The renegotiation of this agreement took place entirely on First Nations land and included Elders supporting the work with prayer, wisdom and input.

Because the Institute believes firmly that informed data should be used to effect change, we support full participation by our members in the 2018 PSES.

The Institute’s submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance regarding the 2019-20 Pre-Budget Consultation is now available online.

Today we join with workers and unions across the world in celebration of the accomplishments and resistance of workers! In that light, and as the ongoing struggle with Phoenix persists, PIPSC is demanding action from the Federal Government.

In accordance with By-Laws 20.3, 20.4, 21.4, and 21.5, there have been several changes in the composition of the Board of Directors due to a leave of absence and resignations. Sean O’Reilly, Acting Vice-President (Full-Time) while Shannon Bittman is on a leave of absence.

With some regret, the Institute has accepted Del Dickson’s resignation as NCR Director on the PIPSC Board of Directors. PIPSC would like to thank Mr. Dickson for his 5.5 years as NCR Director as well as his years as a dedicated Steward and Legacy Foundation Director and Champion.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) is delighted with the announcement that the federal government accepts the model Scientific Integrity policy originally proposed by our members and amended through subsequent consultation.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Goodspeed, the first woman president of PIPSC (1961-1962) on June 27, 2018.

On Thursday, May 24, 2018, you received an email from the PIPSC eMail Migration Team with a unique 6-digit temporary password. Regrettably, Google requires a minimum 8-character password. As such, we have now added 99 at the end of each password previously sent out.

Next month’s election in Ontario is vital. As public service professionals, it’s important that we think about which parties are going to increase public services and which ones are going to decrease them.

On behalf of PIPSC members, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chris Aylward as newly elected National President for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

Last month, I had the opportunity to represent PIPSC and the Canadian labour movement at the Labour 7 (L-7) summit in Ottawa. This was a preparatory meeting hosted by the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) leading up to the G-7 meeting this summer in Québec.

Like all Canadians, members of the Institute are shocked by the senseless deaths and horrific injuries that occurred yesterday afternoon in Toronto. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, at a celebration to mark the 176th anniversary of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), President Debi Daviau presented the PIPSC Gold Medal Award to Dr. John Percival to recognize his leadership and advancement of geoscience in Canada and internationally.
