President’s Note

Greetings NR Members,

It has been a busy three months! Your NR Executive team has been working on a number of key initiatives including updating the NR Group strategic plan. And, we are moving slowly but surely towards achieving some of the objectives identified in that plan. For instance, we are beginning to see more younger NR members active in Sub-Groups, at Regional events and on PIPSC committees. Keep it

up! Additionally, we are making progress on the Professional Development pillar of our strategic plan. For instance, we will meet with the employer (TBS) before the end of 2024 to finalize the details of Joint Institute/TBS Career Development Committee (Article 18:07 Career and Professional Development) that was agreed to in our most recent bargaining round. Stay tuned for more on that! We've been doing a lot more too, but; we are trying to keep these Communications shorter and more frequent. Please make contact if you have any questions or concerns. Till next Time!

Gary Corbett
President, NR Group

Recent NR Meetings

On the weekend of September 20th, the NR group convened in the NCR region to engage in strategic-level planning. Seizing the opportunity, the DND NR Subgroup hosted a dynamic networking event, bringing together representatives from various local NR subgroups. A key focus was to encourage DND NR stewards to connect with their parent constituent bodies.

Steward outreach remains a top priority for the DND NR Subgroup, and this event facilitated meaningful conversations about pressing issues such as the return to the office and contracting out. The networking event took place at The Bridge, located on the picturesque grounds of the Rideau Sports Centre, fostering lively discussions and collaboration among attendees.

Update on NR Logo Development

The development of the logo is proceeding. Several design options have been considered. The intent is to illustrate representation of all three groups, Engs, ARs and Land Surveyors that make up the PIPSC NR Group. PIPSC comms illustrators are now in the process of refining those options. Once completed, they will be presented to the NR group.

NR Subgroup Update - Energy Efficiency and Technology Sector (EETS) 2024 Soccer Tournament

Participating in a sport in the workplace has been known to help boost productivity, raise morale, and promote the physical and emotional well-being of employees. Sixty participants from CanmetENERGY-Ottawa (CE-O), Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) and Office of Energy Research Development (OERD) gathered at the Bells Corners Complex on 1 Haanel Drive from 9am to 4pm on September 11th, 2024, for the third annual EETS Soccer Tournament. Not only to enjoy the benefits of sport participation, but to also have fun and network with colleagues. There were many smiles and laughter seen from all participants throughout the day.

This year, in addition to the soccer tournament, there was also a BBQ offered for every employee at the Bells Corners Complex. Over 200 employees gathered to enjoy good food and good company. Employees enjoyed burgers, fruit snacks, chips, cookies and drinks together. The weather was sunny, warm and everyone enjoyed being outside to enjoy the day. The PIPSC Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) branch, and NR Subgroup, NCR co- sponsored the event with the Public Service Alliance of Canada. The main organizers for the event were Christine MacFarlane and Darius Emadi.

The winning team “Data Driven Defenders” were undefeated the entire tournament. The final game was close and could have gone either way. In the end, “Data Driven Defenders” from OEE remained undefeated and won the tournament. In the spirit of sportsmanship, the teams shook hands at the end of every game.
