The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), a national union representing over 80,000 professionals and scientists across Canada, is seeking a Systems Administrator - Audio and Visual to join its team at the National Office in Ottawa.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Under the direction of the Director, Information Technology (IT) and Program Management and reporting to the Manager, Information Technology (IT) Operations and Project Manager, the Systems Administrator - Audio and Visual plays a key role in connecting people through the strategic use of audio and visual technologies. This position is responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise video conferencing systems and live streaming infrastructure. The role ensures all related systems are secure, up to date, and functioning efficiently to support organizational communications and events.

Key responsibilities include serving as the subject matter expert (SME) for video conferencing technologies, coordinating and hosting live streaming for internal and external events such as town halls, webinars, meetings, and social media sessions, and troubleshooting audio-visual (AV) and IT infrastructure. This includes hands-on support for cameras, projectors, microphones, mobile devices, simultaneous interpretation devices and other related equipment. The position requires a proactive approach to service delivery, technical problem-solving, and maintaining high-quality standards for the Institute’s digital communication platforms.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for audio-visual (AV), simultaneous interpretation and video conferencing technology and respond to service requests from internal stakeholders. 
  • Stay current on latest developments in the areas of audio-visual (AV), simultaneous interpretation and video conferencing technology and conduct technical research to evaluate technology evolution and associated threats and opportunities.
  • Support, coordinate, and host live streaming for video meetings, town hall sessions, webinars, broadcasting, social media sessions and live feeds.
  • Troubleshoot related AV and IT infrastructure and equipment (e.g. cameras, projectors, microphones, recorders, network, mobile devices, etc.) and implement solutions.
  • Research, implement, support and maintain Unified Communications Solutions (Video, Voice, Chat, Phone) and their integration with AV and IT equipment.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and contribute to policies for video and audio technology, simultaneous interpretation, and related activities.
  • Research and recommend new audio and visual technology and best practices to meet business requirements, enhance process efficiency, improve user satisfaction, increase security and reduce costs. 
  • Research, implement, support and perform maintenance on audio and visual systems and services.
  • Collaborate with other technology staff to design, develop, maintain and support audio and visual technology and on-site IT infrastructure.
  • Help forecast and plan AV and video conferencing infrastructure upgrades to meet business needs.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
  • Serve as the first escalation point for issues encountered at the service desk on selected back-end technology platforms.
  • Administer, create, assign, manage, and control security access rights to user accounts, network files and systems, and maintain hardware, software, asset, inventory and user accounts database for staff, members, and elected officials.
  • Implement, install, configure, test, upgrade, support and maintain the Institute desktop hardware, operating systems, printers, network and PC-based software applications and utilities
  • May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis, including service desk support responsibilities as assigned on an ongoing basis.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements 

Education / Experience: 

  • Completion of a two (2) or three (3) year community college or university program in Information Technology, Computer Science or equivalent and one to three years’ experience facilitating corporate video conferencing
  • AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist certification or equivalent AV certifications is considered an asset

Language requirement:

  • English is required
  • Fluency in both French and English is an asset

Skills and experience required:

  • Knowledge of communication technologies, including room and desktop video conferencing and professional audio/visual equipment. 
  • Knowledge of video conferencing solutions, including Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet and any other similar software as required. 
  • Experience with both professional AV solutions and IT-based AV solutions, including design, implementation, maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Experience in corporate network troubleshooting.
  • Experience in a user-focused technical support environment.
  • Self-motivated and initiative to get tasks completed and issues resolved.
  • Demonstrated ability in system analysis, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in an end-user focused IT service desk support environment is an asset.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities.
  • Good customer service and interpersonal skills.

Compensation Package

  • Salary Range: $76,078 to $95,099 (G4)

  • Vacation: 4 weeks per year, plus other generous paid leave
  • Paid Time Off: December 27th to 31st

Preference will be given in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the IAM Local 3011 bargaining unit.
