Did you know that Labour Day has been marked as a statutory public holiday in Canada on the first Monday in September since 1894? We have come a long way since then and unions have secured many benefits for all workers including collective bargaining, occupational health and safety, paid vacations, statutory public holidays, overtime pay, and paid parental leave. PIPSC is determined to continue to seek improvements in the working conditions of our members.

Keeping alive our proud tradition of unions’ solidarity to protect the rights of all workers, PIPSC will join other unions to take part in the 2024 Labour Day march and picnic on Monday, September 2, 2024, organized by the Ottawa District Labour Council.

Therefore, the NCR executive would like to invite you to participate in the Labour Day 2024 march and picnic, per the following schedule:

Monday, September 2, 2024

11 AM ET: Gather at Ottawa City Hall (Elgin and Lisgar) for registration, hot and cold drinks and a welcome gift to show PIPSC colours during the march.

You are encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle to prevent dehydration. Water bottles can be refilled at the City Hall where you can also use their washrooms. Limited parking spaces will be available on the streets nearby and the City Hall parking will also be available at reduced, weekend rates.

12:00 PM ET: The march will start, following a designated route of approximately 2.2 KM (Lisgar-Elgin-Gladstone), arriving at MacNabb Park, where Labour Day activities will take place including picnic and activities for children. A float (vehicle) will be available with limited number of seats for those who may not want to walk the whole distance.

Pre-registration: To ensure that PIPSC members and their guests have adequate food and refreshments, kindly pre-register by replying to Waheed.Khan@pipsc.ca no later than Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Confirmation: A confirmation message with additional information will be sent to those who pre-register, on a first come first served basis.

Volunteers: We welcome our members, who want to volunteer to help with organizing the event, setting up, and cleaning up after the event.

If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know on the pre-registration form – and whether you can arrive early (10 AM), stay late (till 3 PM), or help out during the march from 11 AM to 1:00 PM).

Questions: If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to write to Waheed.Khan@pipsc.ca
