- Regional Director Report - (M. Cranny)
I think our Advanced Labour School was a success. I heard good feedback about both Grievance Handling and Performance Management courses. The latter resulted in a trip to Prince Rupert to meet with members there about PMA’s and how folks might deal with them. More on that later. I think overall the facilities were good but maybe a bit small. Trying to find affordable options is a never ending goal as prices continue to climb.
It has been a busy few months:
April 15 - Victoria RE Subgroup AGM, good group of dedicated folks.
April 22 - virtual session on Election landscape with Kathleen Monk. This was well attended, about 60 people, great presentation and questions. Really indebted to Kathleen for providing this excellent session. Great feedback from attendees as well.
April 23 - Executive Compensation Committee meeting
April 24 - Vancouver Chapter RMG AGM and Victoria Branch Meet ‘n Greet with DND Consultation folks. A lot for one day but great to meet with the RMG members and chat briefly with their new president Kim Scriver. Also great to meet the DND consultation folks back home.
May 1 - I attended the CFIA-VM Subgroup AGM in Langley. Lots of issues in the group which is currently understaffed with lots of demand. Competitive and fair compensation is a big issue. Was glad to be joined by one of the ERO staff as well.
May 4-7 - Regional Directors and Board of Directors meetings. Unfortunately my pitch for the Developing Engagement Leaders did not get to the floor, it was left to the EC who have turned it back. It looks like there may be an opportunity to get it done by pushing it back a year. There were lots of other matters attended to including IT projects with some clearer deadlines agreed to. We should see both the Steward Portal by the AGM and some version of the new website by Sept of this year. Navigar was also discussed, there will be a look at making it a separate entity similar to the building trust and legacy foundation. We have reopened the investigation into updating HQ to have more meeting space such that we can save money by holding more meetings there. There were some policy updates (Negotiations and Labour Disputes, Better Together and Family Care). There were a number of confidential matters dealt with as well.
May 8 - Vancouver CRA AGM, this was a very well attended event, ~170 folks. Doug Mason and Simon Chiu were in attendance. WFA and RTO are the big ticket items.
May 13 - Pete MacDougall and I attended an event in Prince Rupert to mostly talk about PMA related issues with the DFO members. There was a good turnout, 8 in person and 3 online. Lots of good questions. Also potential interest from a couple folks in becoming stewards so I’ll follow up with that. Thanks to Katie Beach for organizing that so quickly.
May 22 - ECC Meeting
May 22-24 - BCFed Regional Conference, this was very interesting. Got to finally meet Jamey Mills and others from PSAC. Good panels with topics such as the shifting political landscape (including former PIPSC Kiavash Najafi), Community Solidarity, Young Workers in Action, Labour at the table, and Climate fallout. I also attended a leadership workshop session focused on inclusivity. There was a fun bowling event. Quite glad I could attend.
May 24 - Dean attended the joint SP/IT Sub group movie event in my stead, thanks Dean!
May 31 - I attended the Vancouver Branch movie event. Well attended, many folks you don’t see at other events so nice to connect with them in a fun environment.
June 9 - Victoria Branch BBQ, great turnout, ~80 people. Always fun, talked WFA, RTO, union involvement and the usual. Some good questions.
I have learned of some issues at YHC and we’ll keep an eye on that.
Next week I will be headed to Ottawa for ECC, RD, BOD and joint BOD/AC meetings. That will likely be my last in person event for a couple months as you know, I will be getting my left knee replaced July 7th and will be off my feet (mostly) for 6-8 weeks.
Accept and approve Morgan’s oral report. m/s/c
- Office/Staff Report – (K. Hawkins)
There are currently 333 files in the region, an increase of 33 since I drafted my regional report for the council. Of these, there are 92 at CSC alone and we now have two people assigned to manage these files with a few outliers with other EROs due to conflicts of interest. The highest contributor of work is currently human rights. We have three adjudication hearings booked for this year, one has been given reconsideration rights, the second one will likely have a similar process and the third is likely proceeding but will be very challenging. It will be done in person in Vancouver. We have 29 files referred to adjudication in this region and have undertaken an analysis project to ensure all should be moving forward.
I have requested another ERO for the 2026/27 budget so that will be captured in the overall asked from the LR section. We have Kevin Jacobs working with us for a year (April 2025-26) but he will remain located in Wpg and travel as needed. I do intend to bring Kevin to the Steward Council to get to know folks from a regional level.
The labour school was very well received. Several people expressed satisfaction and increased confidence in dealing with the topics we covered. I will share that we found significant gaps in the performance management education content and did some revamping. This resulted in a much better session and Education is now following our outline, as they were receptive to the feedback.
Finally, I will be away from July 25 - August 25. Sean Kemball will be the acting Manager for that period.
