Region

The BC/Yukon Region successfully hosted a half-day virtual Regional Council on Saturday, May 29, 2021.  Thank you to all the delegates who volunteered their time to look after the important business of the Region and Institute.  The Council was well attended and included a comprehensive presentation and Q & A session with our President Debi Daviau.  Thanks for attending Debi!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Dean Corda, Angela Cowie and Morgan Cranny to the Regional Executive; and congratulate Ken Antao on his reappointment.  They will be joining Philip Mantler, Carl Cahoon and Pete MacDougall who are continuing their terms.  In addition, on behalf of the Region, I would like to thank Karen Hall, Philip Tan and Adele McLean, who are no longer continuing with the Executive, for their service and commitment over the past several years.

The delegates at this year’s 76th BC/Yukon Regional Council passed a motion in solidarity with hotel workers at the Hilton Metrotown and Gateway Hotel in Richmond.  PIPSC and the BC/Yukon Region will be boycotting these facilities during this unresolved dispute.  See the following posting on the PIPSC website: https://pipsc.ca/news-issues/announcements/solidarity-vancouver-hotel-workers

During this time period, the Region also wrapped up its virtual 2021 Advanced Labour School.  Thanks to staff for organizing then leading these two classes and for all the stewards who made the time to upgrade their skills to better serve our members.  Both classes were well received.

With the reduction in health restrictions associated with the pandemic, it is looking promising that we may be hosting in-person meetings in the not too distant future.  While the health and safety of our members, staff and the public will remain our top priority, we are excited at this potential opportunity.  Your Regional Executive, the Regional Office and myself will be meeting over the coming weeks and months to start planning for either outcome.

Plans for September to December 2021 will be updated over the summer months.  Keep an eye on upcoming events at https://pipsc.ca/regions/bc-yukon. Save the following dates (TBC).

  • Steward Council, Burnaby, BC – October 22 & 23.
  • OSH Training, Burnaby, BC – December 3 & 4
  • Young Professionals Forum, Burnaby, BC – December 3

National / Board Initiatives

Pursuant to the Board mandate letters and additional assignments, my national focus over this last period has included:

  • Chair, Executive Compensation Committee (ECC):  With the completion of our Triennial Review process, the ECC continues its hard work on the rest of its 2019-2021 work plan.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my pride and appreciation for the thankless work of this Committee.  While one of the results of this Triennial Review cycle was not supported at the June 5 AGM Day Two, I would like to assure all members the work of the ECC has been:

  • based on best practices and industry standards in compensation and governance;
  • founded in evidence and research;
  • reviewed and recommended by third party compensation and governance experts; and,
  • following all principles of fairness, equity and unionism.

It is important that compensation is establish by evidence and not politics.  We expect the same as public servants.  Imagine if our compensation was determined at a Liberal Party, or worse, a Conservative Party political convention.

  • Innovation / Building Trust / Life Insurance Trust:  No updates during this reporting period.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments on my Board appointments (elected) and the specific portfolios assigned to me by the President / CEO.
